“A Special Tribute for the King of Comedy”


Comedy King Dolphy celebrates his 80th birthday last July 31, 2008 at the Meralco Theater where a special tribute was given to him by ABS-CBN. Rodolfo Vera Quizon or Dolphy started his showbiz career in a radio program at ABS-CBN in front of the Manila Cathedral where he has three radio shows.

The most popular in the sixty’s his tandem with Helen Gamboa that is entitled “Buhay Artista” that was soon bring into screen with his leading lady Ms. Susan Roces. His great friend late Genny Lopez- former President of ABS-CBN and father of Mr. Gabby Lopez, has always told him of giving him a TV show that made into reality celebrating also his 50 years in the industry.

The highlights of his celebration are the video clips of his former leading ladies like Gloria Romero, Alma Moreno and many more especially his wife Zsa Zsa Padilla who was in the US that time. An old black and white video clip are also viewed in the big screen showing Dolphy in his younger years who also stands not only as a comedian but as a great dancer.

Present during his big day is Vic Sotto whom he sings with in a duet; former President Erap Estrada who was his partner in making the a foundation to help the needy film workers and Sharon Cuneta who performed a song of gratitude “Thanks to you”.

The country’s famous singer like Jed Madila, AiAi de las Alas, Toni Gonzaga, Chocolayt, Kuh Ledesma and a lot more performs all the musical numbers as tribute to the Man of the night. Vhong Navarro a comedian himself, an actor and member of the Streetboys entertain the audience with a dance number imitating Dolphy dance move in his video clipping that was viewed during his performance.

Dolphy who was born in 1927, now 80 was still at his best and soon to publish a biography of his life. It will relay the story of the most intriguing part of his life which is the mother’s of his 18 children.
